A New York Pianist Builds a 144-Second Jazz-Pop Single Around Richard Philbin’s Alto Saxophone

Phil Lentz built Bebopping Along in 144 seconds. He wrote the jazz-pop instrumental and plays its piano, but he hands the melody to Richard Philbin on alto saxophone. Dave Young plays drums and Wolfgang Lugomarsini plays bass. It opened his second album in November 2024, and it is still the quickest way into his writing.

Phil Lentz’s music is in the playlist below, and his full run of coverage sits on his artist profile. Bebopping Along reached TopMusic.News through PopHits.Co Music Charts, which verifies independent artists and places their releases across its network of music news sites. Press play on it first, then read on for how the track is put together.

Phil Lentz Hands the Bebopping Along Melody to an Alto Saxophone and Answers It From the Piano

The build is simple on paper and busy in practice. Philbin’s alto leads, and Lentz’s piano answers with playful, intricate lines. That is how Music Crowns heard it when it reviewed the single in January 2025. The review described a saxophone lead in dynamic interplay with nimble piano, with Young and Lugomarsini anchoring the groove underneath.

Similarly, V13 described the track as a light, bouncy jazz number with sparkling piano, soft percussion and the swinging tones of Philbin’s saxophone. Those three textures define the mix. Because the percussion stays soft, the saxophone and the piano can trade the foreground without fighting for it.

At 2 minutes 24 seconds, the arrangement has no room for long solos. That compression is the pop half of the jazz-pop description. The tune states its idea, lets the two lead instruments talk, and finishes while the listener still wants more.

With No Lyric to Carry It, the Alto Saxophone Line Does the Singing on This Instrumental Jazz-Pop Single

Bebopping Along has no words, so the melody has to do the work a lyric would. On the album, it sits right before I Remember the Early Days, a sung track with vocals by Red Heller. That makes the contrast easy to hear: one song tells its story in words, the other in a saxophone line.

As a result, the weight falls on Philbin’s phrasing. In bebop, the melody stated at the top, the head, is the song’s identity, and listeners remember its shape the way they remember a chorus. The title does the rest. It promises motion and a light step, and the arrangement keeps that promise from the first bar.

The Bebopping Along Structure Phil Lentz Built With Dennis Harte at Studio Mozart

The production chain is short and specific. Dennis Harte produced the album at Studio Mozart in New Jersey, and Kosta Kamcev engineered it. Tom Hutten then mastered it at Bionic Mastering. Bebopping Along opens the record, an eleven-track set that runs about 29 minutes, so the compact single sets the pace for everything after it.

Lentz writes everything he plays. He is a New York composer and jazz pianist whose albums move between jazz, pop and folk, and this track is the most concentrated statement of the jazz side of his writing. He also plays piano in jazz workshops that have performed at the Bitter End, the Cutting Room and Silvana in Manhattan. In fact, Bebopping Along has the shape of a workshop tune: a clear head, a short form and room for two voices to talk.

Listeners Who Play Cannonball Adderley, Horace Silver and Vince Guaraldi

Three older records explain the appeal. Cannonball Adderley took an alto-led small group onto the pop chart with Mercy, Mercy, Mercy, a No. 11 Billboard Hot 100 hit in 1967. Philbin’s swinging alto sits in that same accessible lane. Horace Silver built hard bop around melodies people could hum, as on Song for My Father, and Lentz writes with the same tune-first instinct. Finally, Vince Guaraldi won a Grammy for Cast Your Fate to the Wind and took jazz piano to a general audience, which is exactly the audience this single is aimed at.

None of those names is a claim of influence. Instead, they are a guide for jazz and pop listeners in the US who want a new independent name and a track that respects bebop without asking for an hour of their time.

TopMusic.News curator team: “Bebopping Along is a lesson in economy. One saxophone line, one piano answering it, a rhythm section that never crowds them, and the whole idea delivered in under two and a half minutes.”

Bebopping Along is out now on Spotify and Apple Music, and the full album is on Spotify and Bandcamp.
