Taylor Swift Said There Was No 13th Song, Now There Are Four

Taylor Swift Said There Was No 13th Song, Now There Are Four

The Life of a Showgirl was built as a closed set: twelve songs for a twelfth album, with nothing held back for a deluxe edition. On Friday that structure changes. Taylor Swift has announced The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore, an extended version that adds four new songs as tracks 13 to 16, and they arrive in the same release as the single she revealed only a day earlier, “Patient Zero”.

The new tracks are “Patient Zero”, “Cleveland!”, “Pink Clouding” and “Babylon”. According to Variety, they were not left over from the original sessions. Taylor Swift wrote them afterwards in Sweden with Max Martin and Shellback, the two producers behind the album, during a trip that began as a celebration of how well the record had done.

What The Encore Actually Adds

The easiest way to understand the release is to look at how it is assembled. The original twelve songs stay in place, in their original order, from “The Fate of Ophelia” through to the title track, “The Life of a Showgirl”. The four new songs follow them. Rolling Stone published the full sixteen-song running order, and the new material sits at the end rather than being threaded through the album.

That separation shows up in how the streaming services are presenting it. Variety notes that Apple Music lists the tracks as Disc 1, the original twelve, and Disc 2, the four new songs, while Spotify shows all sixteen in a single running order. Variety also reports that no physical release has been announced for the expanded edition, so for now The Encore is a digital release that goes live as Thursday night turns into Friday morning.

“Patient Zero” has its own separate rollout. Billboard reports that it is available to pre-order on Swift’s website alongside an acoustic version and a piano version, each with a different cover. The new artwork for The Encore continues the look of the original album: Variety says the cover photography is again by the fashion duo Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, and Billboard describes Swift standing in front of a pinkish-red curtain in a glittering fringed minidress.

Written in Sweden After the Record-Breaking Week

The songs exist because of the numbers the first version posted. The Life of a Showgirl debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 4.002 million equivalent album units, which Billboard describes as a record-breaking total and Swift calls the biggest first week for an album in history. It went on to spend twelve weeks at No. 1 and produced two Billboard Hot 100 chart-toppers, “The Fate of Ophelia” and “Opalite”.

In her announcement, Swift explained that she travelled to Sweden to celebrate that response with Max Martin and Shellback. The plan, as she describes it, was simply to reflect on the moment, but there was a studio there, and the three of them did what they tend to do when they feel strongly about something: they wrote more songs. She presented the four tracks as the product of gratitude for the way fans received the album, rather than as a planned commercial extension of it.

The partnership itself is worth noting. Variety points out that before The Life of a Showgirl, Swift had not worked with Max Martin and Shellback since the Reputation era. Their return for the twelfth album was one of its defining production choices, and The Encore suggests the reunion produced more material than a single record could hold.

Why a 13th Track Was Never Supposed to Exist

The reason The Encore has caught fans off guard is that Swift had been unusually firm about the original track count. Rolling Stone recalls that when the album came out on 3 October last year, she said on New Heights, the podcast hosted by her husband Travis Kelce, that there was no 13th song and that no others were coming. She described the twelve tracks as a complete puzzle, with every song there for a reason and nothing that could be added or taken away.

Variety notes that Swifties had long assumed there would be no deluxe or bonus edition for exactly that reason. The explanation now offered squares the two positions: the original twelve were complete as recorded, and these four were written later, in a separate burst of work after the album’s release. It is a meaningful distinction for a songwriter who has paid close attention to how each era of her catalogue is packaged.

The construction supports that reading. By leaving the twelve-song album intact and appending the new material as a separate block, The Encore keeps the original sequence exactly as it was released, while giving the new songs their own place at the end.

The Clues Fans Decoded First

As with most Swift releases, the announcement came after a trail of hints that fans had already started to piece together online. Variety reports that the phrase “Patient for the encore” appeared at the side of the frame in the music video for “Opalite”, a detail that looks deliberate now that the title of both the single and the extended edition is public.

The most elaborate clue came during the Emmys telecast. Variety describes a pre-taped sketch in which Swift, playing a Law & Order: SVU detective, told viewers that what they were looking for was hiding in plain sight, then delivered a string of seemingly random words: “Saccharide. Aries. From the vineyard. North or south.” Fans worked out that taking the third letter of each produced the word “encore”.

The online signals kept coming this week. Rolling Stone notes that Swift’s website changed from sparkly orange to dark grey and began listing three CD versions of “Patient Zero”, each with a different cover of the singer in black, and that she changed her profile picture across social media, a move that has signalled a new era for her in the past. By Wednesday, the new profile picture was The Encore’s cover.

What the Release Pattern Tells Us

The single-and-album timing also answered a question fans had been debating since Tuesday. Variety points out that Swift had not released a stand-alone single ahead of an album for some time; the last clear example was “Me!”, which arrived months before Lover in 2019. Because “Patient Zero” and The Encore arrive in the same hour, the release follows her recent habit of putting a single out alongside the full project rather than ahead of it.

The Encore has also quietly settled another piece of speculation. Variety reports that there had been widespread conjecture that Swift would mark the 20th anniversary of her debut album this autumn with a new “Taylor’s Version” re-recording. New songs have taken that slot instead, at least for now. And one of the new titles already has a likely story attached: Billboard reads “Cleveland!” as a nod to Travis Kelce’s Ohio hometown, though the song itself will have to confirm that on Friday.

For the charts, the timing is significant. The Life of a Showgirl spent twelve weeks at No. 1 last year, and an expanded edition with four new songs gives its long run a fresh week of attention close to the album’s first anniversary on 3 October. Chart milestones like that are the kind of story this site follows closely; our recent report on how Stray Kids tied the Rolling Stones with their ninth No. 1 showed how quickly a strong fanbase can turn a release week into a record.

What to Listen for on Friday

The four songs will be heard for the first time together, so the most interesting question is how they relate to the album they are attached to. They were written by the same three people who made The Life of a Showgirl, in a different setting and a different mood, which makes them a rare look at what a team sounds like after a success rather than before one.

Listen for whether they sound like a continuation or a coda. The Disc 1 and Disc 2 split on Apple Music suggests Swift sees them as a separate chapter, and titles such as “Pink Clouding” and “Babylon” give little away about the direction. Whatever they turn out to be, they arrive through the same channels at the same time on Friday, 25 September, and they will be the first new tracks attached to the album that was supposed to have no thirteenth song.
