A Faith-Based Americana Rocker Records with a White Heart Founder and a Former Imperials Singer

Seven musicians share the arrangement of I’m Not My Yesterday. Howard Gripp sings it and plays acoustic guitar, and producer Billy Smiley adds electric and acoustic guitars and background vocals. The single came out on 11 September 2026. Even so, the credits behind it lead straight back to the Christian rock scene that Nashville built in the 1980s.

Howard Gripp is in the playlist below with I’m Not My Yesterday, and his coverage is collected on the Howard Gripp profile. The single arrived through PopHits.Co Music Charts, which verifies independent artists and places their releases across its network of music news sites. Listen for the background vocals, then read the rest.

The 1980s Wave in Nashville Christian Rock Started With Bands Like White Heart

That scene changed fast in the early 1980s. Whiteheart, also written White Heart, formed in 1982 as a contemporary Christian pop-rock band. At first, Billy Smiley and Mark Gersmehl were its founding members, with a cast of bandmates that kept changing. Over the next fifteen years it released thirteen albums, the last in 1997. After that, Smiley started his own label, Cul-de-Sac Records.

The vocal groups moved with it. The Imperials began as a southern gospel quartet and became a staple of contemporary Christian music from the 1970s. Then, in 1987, their album This Year’s Model introduced two new members, Jimmie Lee Sloas and Ron Hemby, and took the group toward a rock sound.

So the wave had two halves. One was guitar bands bringing pop-rock into church music. Meanwhile, the other was the old harmony groups following them there. Both halves left session players and singers in Nashville who still work on records today.

Howard Gripp Fits Into That Lineage as a Faith-Based Americana Rock Artist With a Nashville Band

Howard Gripp describes himself as a faith-based Americana rock artist. His songs come from real-life experience, and they are written for people working through hard seasons. The message is that it is fine to struggle and possible to come out stronger. For that reason, he wants the music to introduce listeners to Jesus or to deepen their faith.

This single puts that message in the hands of a Nashville Christian rock session crew. In fact, the Spotify credits read like a 1980s Christian rock reunion. Billy Smiley produced it and shares the writing and the arrangement with Gripp. Ron Hemby, the Imperials singer from This Year’s Model, sings background vocals alongside Smiley. Finally, Billy Whittington handles the mix and the master with Smiley.

The rest of the band fills out the build. Mike Payne plays electric and acoustic guitars, Chris Brown plays bass, and Miles McPherson plays drums and percussion. Meanwhile, Jonathan Brown covers both organ and piano, the keys that give an Americana arrangement its warmth.

The song itself is about the past. In his own words on his site, the past belongs to your story without having to decide who you are now. So the single is about leaving it behind and believing that change is possible. It runs to four minutes and 16 seconds. The release pairs it with Welcome To Your Life, his song about second chances.

Gripp’s catalogue is built the same way, one hopeful single after another. His own site lists Strong, Love Rewrote My Story, You Still Hear, Father Help Me and I Can Feel The Change, the last of them with Erin Oakley.

White Heart and The Imperials Are the Adjacent Acts Behind Howard Gripp and I’m Not My Yesterday

The adjacent acts here are not reference points picked from a list. Instead, they are, in part, the people on the record. White Heart is the band its producer co-founded. The Imperials are the group one of its background singers joined in 1987. Ron Hemby later sang with the country group The Buffalo Club. Its 1997 single If She Don’t Love You reached number nine on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart.

That history matters for what I’m Not My Yesterday is. Gripp’s own songs come from a church-and-community tradition. The people around him on this recording come from the professional end of the same faith. As a result, a local songwriter’s message is carried by a band that knows how a Christian rock single is put together.

The live side stays close to home. His site lists The Overflowing Cup at the Overflowing Cup Total Life Center in Beloit, Wisconsin, on 14 November. After that comes a set at The Garage Bikes + Brews in River Falls on 3 December. On 5 December he plays the IDEAS Christmas Market at the Bridgepoint Mission Center in Wisconsin Dells, which is free.

It suits listeners who grew up on 1980s Christian rock and want new songs with that craft behind them. It also suits anyone who needs a song about starting again, for example after a hard year.

TopMusic.News’s curator team: “Listen for the background vocals. Ron Hemby and Billy Smiley sing them behind Gripp, and that is the most 1980s Nashville thing on the record. These are singers who carried church harmony into rock, now carrying someone else’s song.”

Stream I’m Not My Yesterday, with Welcome To Your Life, on Spotify. Follow Howard Gripp on Spotify and Instagram, and find his shows and music on the official website.
