The independent music scene has always been a niche market for people who defy conventional tastes. In today’s internet age, it is easier than ever to discover music that may have previously eluded you and the genre clashes are more interesting than ever.
What sets indie experimental soundtrack music apart from pop, rock, and classic music is that it is mainly written and produced by a single independent artist.
It’s usually characterized by dissonant synthesizer tones, allusions to the emotional or psychological condition of the artist, and a lot of other elements you can normally find in electronic music. It also works as a proper audio therapy, which we really recommend as it’s a good experience and also helps to relax.
Indie experimental soundtrack music is by no means a new fad, it has been around for as long as electronic music and even newer indie subgenres, but more so with the latter.
This is because a lot of indie filmmakers are starting to go out of their comfort zone and then experimenting with newer genres to create new, fresh and wonderful sounds that they wouldn’t normally make.
This is why indie experimental soundtrack music is becoming more and more popular, basically, goes hand in hand. The problem is, that people don’t really know what this music really is. So let’s explore some common characteristics found in good indie experimental soundtracks. I will also show you some bands that have been known to create this kind of music.
You can listen to our full playlist which contains experimental music, and know more about the artists by scrolling down the page.
1) SONOMANCER – Dreamscapes
If you’re into quirkier music, check out the new single from the Australian band Sonomancer. They’re a psychedelic electronic experimental band that delivers heavy metal, avant-garde and electronic experimental sounds with a prog-rock twist. Their new single, Dreamscapes, is a dreamy soundscape that has been defined by producers from PopHits.Co as electro post-rock and soundtrack music.
About the sound style, they’ve been described as cinematic and atmospheric, but we’d say they’re more like a cross between psych-rock and dream pop—which makes sense considering they’re based in Melbourne.

The whole project is a mix of acoustic metal, prog rock, and funk tones, resulting in amazing instrumental sounds that you will not regret listening to. We identified post-rock and even some groovy anthemic songs that give that hint of cinematic soundtracks.
It’s got a relaxing vibe to it yet it’s still pretty catchy, the track called The Wolf And The Hawk is the best example of it, seems like it’s telling a history without lyrics. If you like what you hear, check out Spencer Elliott on Spotify and follow them for more!

Made By Thawing Ice is a leftfield, experimental electronica track with a cinematic soundscape. It’s got jungle beats, ambient synths, and eclectic instrumentation featuring everything from piano to bass to even a xylophone sound.
The track is full of sound—there’s a lot going on in the background, but you can still hear all of the individual elements clearly.
