‘Ethel’s Odyssey’ originated from a series of lockdown experiments where Ian Hand could not convene with his bandmates but found solace in creating alone. He meticulously layered drums, bass, and keys, exploring new avenues of expression. Particularly thrilling for Hand was sourcing audio clips from archive.org, which he ingeniously fused to construct narratives in his tracks. This process allowed him to not only pursue personal growth but also contribute to a noble cause, as all proceeds from physical sales will support Tredagh Lodge, the local Alzheimer’s Day Care Centre in Drogheda.
In this carefully curated EP, two tracks notably stand out. ‘Something Ain’t Right’ is a haunting reflection on the life of an elderly person, possibly a once-famous figure, grappling with the amalgamation of past and present. As the listener delves deeper, it becomes evident that this character is likely suffering from Alzheimer’s or dementia, making the song both poignant and profound. ‘4ft8 Blues,’ on the other hand, addresses the environmental and social neglect during the Beeching Act of the 1960s, when much of Britain’s railway infrastructure was dismantled.
“In ‘Ethel’s Odyssey,’ Ian Hand has masterfully created a diverse auditory experience that is both reflective and forward-thinking, effortlessly blending historical narratives with modern musical elements,” says our team from PopHits.Co. This level of introspection and creativity places Ian Hand in the company of renowned artists like Radiohead and Arcade Fire, who are also known for their genre-bending, thought-provoking works.
